Mau (formerly Max)

Hi!

We thought we'd let you know how Mau is doing since we adopted him in early
August.

For the first few days, he hid under the bed and was very scared of our bedroom door. After we showed him what was on the other side he gained so much confidence and chose his new favourite places - the window ledge and our bed. He only ever goes under the bed now at night when he crazily attacks our feet and duvet and then retreats quickly to avoid us.

He escaped into the rest of the house a little early, and confronted his main objects of fascination (the hamsters) very happily. He'd sit in front of their cage and watch them as they went along their business for a few hours per day. The hamsters (Dot and Apple) don't seem to mind him much; they still climb the cage walls even when he's on top, looking in.

We did have a 'cage mishap' recently when Mau (mysteriously) opened the cage locks and let the hamsters roam free for a night. They enjoyed the living room a lot but were glad to get back to their cage. (Cat-hamster play is always supervised from now on!)

A few odd habits that we've noticed are, he waits outside the bathroom door for one of us, meowing and pawing at it till he's let in, then rolls around on the floor to say thanks! He likes to sleep belly-up like a small hairy person, usually next to either one of us on the sofa or between us on the bed. He knows when meal times are and if we're ever even a few minutes late he'll pounce / meow /nudge the food box till we remember. Lastly, he's developed a likening for sleeping on my stomach for the odd 30 mins per night until he stretches too much to one side and falls off the bed.

Mau has only got a few days left before he'll be free to roam outside everyday. He's really looking forward to it, whenever he has an urge to go out, he hits the windows till we open them a bit so he can sniff the air coming through. He makes a trilling sound when he can see a bird outside the window and caught his first victim (a fly) the other day.

We'd really like to thank you for letting us have him and look forward to the time when we'll find a friend for him at the centre!
